Tryout Q & A
What is the schedule for tryouts, and where are they held?
Tryouts are held in July and August at Diamond Sports (1217 13th St SE, Puyallup, WA 98372). Each age group has a specific tryout date and time. Players can register online HERE. Tryout times can be found on our website HERE or on our social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X) @diamondsportstc.
What teams does Diamond Sports offer?
Our program offers teams from 9u to 18u.
How many tryouts do we need to attend?
Players only need to attend one tryout, even if multiple dates are listed. However, in some cases, coaches may invite a player to a second tryout for further evaluation.
We recommend attending the earliest couple of tryouts available, as team spots are limited and may fill quickly.
Do I need to register for tryouts?
Yes, registration is available through our website HERE.
What equipment is needed for tryouts and team practices?
Players should bring a glove, a bat, and a helmet. NO cleats are allowed in the building for tryouts.
Do you have coaches assigned to all your teams before tryouts?
Yes, we believe it’s important for families to know who will be coaching their player before committing to a team. This allows you to meet the coach, understand their approach, and ensure it’s a good fit for your player and your family.
All-Inclusive Program – No Hidden Costs for Players or Coaches
We keep it simple: one price covers everything: Uniforms, Umpires, Leagues, Tournaments, Baseballs, Training and Facility use. There are no surprise fees for players or coaches. While other teams/programs may advertise a lower upfront cost and then ask families to pay separately for uniforms, tournaments, or training, we include it all from the start. The same goes for our coaches — team gear, training resources, and support are all part of the package. With exception the player fee does not include travel expenses if teams travel for tournaments, extra tournaments added outside the regular season, individual strength training or individual lessons, and spirit packs that will be available multiple times throughout the offseason.
Does Your Program Allow Pick-Up Players?
We do not allow pick up players in our program. We also do not move players from team to team in an effort to win games on the weekend. Our focus is on long-term development and building a strong team culture, both on and off the field.
In rare cases, if a team is short on players, we may make exceptions to ensure games can be played safely. However, these instances are the exception, not the rule. We believe that consistency, commitment, and shared experiences are essential to player growth and team success.
What is Diamond Sports’ history and experience with youth baseball?
The 2025/26 season, Diamond Sports is honored to be celebrating its 33rd year in youth baseball development. Our facility, staff, and coaches have built a strong reputation by providing high quality training and supporting players’ growth. Most of our alumni have gone on to play college baseball, with many reaching professional levels. Our program focuses on creating well-rounded athletes who excel on and off the field. Check out our alumni HERE.
What is the typical commitment level for a player?
We value commitment and consistency, and we encourage players to attend all scheduled training sessions, practices, and games, especially during the winter, spring, and summer. At the same time, we support and encourage multi-sport athletes — we believe in the long-term benefits of playing multiple sports and the benefit of being a well rounded athlete.
While we expect players to prioritize baseball during the core season, we understand there may be occasional conflicts. Please connect with your coach to get the specific details about the team's commitment level and expectations.
Season Overview:
9u-14u: Off-season winter training runs mid October to the beginning of April, with in-season typically spanning March through July.
15u-18u: Off-season training runs mid October to the beginning of March. Teams will take a break for HS baseball, with in-season typically running from Memorial Day through July.
What does an Off-season practice look like?
During the off-season, players train twice a week, once during the week with our professional training staff and once on the weekend with their respective team coaches. Most off-season practices are 2 hours.
Weekday sessions are led by Diamond Sports’ experienced trainers alongside team coaches, ensuring a consistent and unified approach every week. This consistency is key — it means players hear the same message from practice to practice, reinforcing development. We keep our athlete-to-coach ratio low and our instructional quality high.
Unlike other programs that pack the facility with too many players, we intentionally limit group size to create a more focused, productive training environment. Fewer players and more staff means more individual attention, more reps, and better performance results. Every practice is built around competitive skill development in a structured, high-energy atmosphere.
Do you have flexible scheduling for multi-sport athletes?
Absolutely! To support multi-sport athletes, we rotate weekday practice days each week — Week 1 on Monday, Week 2 on Tuesday, Week 3 on Wednesday, and so on. This system helps athletes stay consistent with their baseball development while still honoring other commitments like school sports or activities.
For example, if a player has basketball games every Tuesday, they won’t have to miss baseball practice every single week. By rotating practice days, we create more balanced access for all athletes, making it easier for them to stay engaged and get the most out of the program without having to choose between sports.
Do you have alumni who have advanced to college or professional baseball?
Yes! Our program has helped develop over 300 players who have gone on to play at the collegiate and professional levels. Check out our list of Alumni.
Is there a pathway to college recruitment through Diamond Sports?
Absolutely. We support all players interested in pursuing college baseball. We have a recruiting 101 course available for all of our members, and we do hands on recruiting meetings for all of our players.
Many players from our program have successfully been recruited to college teams, and our staff is here to help make that process smoother.
How are team placements determined during tryouts?
Teams are determined based on skill level, coach assessments, and team needs. Our tryouts are designed to evaluate players in hitting, pitching, fielding, and game awareness. After tryouts, we’ll contact families with the results and details for team placement or training recommendations.
What level of competition can we expect?
Our teams participate in leagues and tournaments locally, regionally, and, for certain teams, even nationally. The level of competition varies by age and team, with older teams often competing in showcase tournaments where college scouts may be in attendance.
Are there fundraising opportunities?
Fundraising options may also be available to help offset team fees. These are typically organized through each team individually.
